Is Letterman Trying to Steal the 'Best Late Night TV Music' Crown?

Ever since the show first aired in 2009, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has ruled the music department of late night television. Not only has Fallon regularly had a constant stream of great acts grace his stage (it could be considered a cream of the crop of Pitchfork.com indie elite), but he is also fortunate enough to have hip hop's greatest band, The Roots, be his in-house band. As if this is not enough, The Roots also regularly play with the guest musical acts!

Yet, since returning to the airwaves Jan. 2, the Late Show with David Letterman has been giving Fallon's show a run for their money. This week has seen Letterman host a who's-who of hipster darlings. Tuesday's show started the year off with a bang! Guided By Voices (Robert Pollard reunited with the classic mid-90's GBV line-up) performed 'The Unsinkable Fats Domino', the lead single off their new album 'Let's Go Eat The Factory' (released Jan.1, 2012 n their label, GBV inc.). While known for their chain-smoking, beer-guzzling and always raucous shows, Pollard and co. did not disappoint their fans by taming down their act. There might not have been any beer, and they did abide by New York's no smoking laws, but the band did give a enthusiastic performance, culminating in bassist Greg Demo falling flat on his ass in a spirited display of rock n roll acrobatics.

The following night, Jan. 3, WU LYF (which stands for World Unite! Lucifer Youth Foundation) a new band from Manchester, and my personal favorite new band of 2011, made their Late Show debut with 'Heavy Pop' from the album 'Go Tell Fire To The Mountain' (self-released, 2011). And 'Heavy Pop' it was! With their combination of beautiful, reverb-washed guitars, heavy drums that mix military-march beats with good ol' fashion pop sensibility and indistinguishably-barked vocals, this band is geared to set the world on fire! They were the epitome of indie-chic, barely acknowledging Letterman's (surprisingly) enthusiastic post-song greetings, and then walking off stage before the show was able to cut to a commercial break.

On Jan. 4, Montreal's own Barr Brothers made their first appearance on American television. Andy and Brad Barr (along with Sarah Page and Andres Vial) have spent the year getting lots of attention for their self-titled debut record (released on Secret City Records, 2011). They have played with many of Montreal's biggest names and also had a headlining spot on the Trees Stage during Montreal's Osheaga Festival. They played the lead single off their album, 'Beggar in the Morning'. This is just another nod to Montreal's ever-burgeoning music scene, highlighting the city's love for dark indie-folk.

So what will 2012 hold for late night television music? In a day and age when music videos are no longer the staple of the MTVs and MuchMusics of the world, late night television is one of the last ways for new bands to get exposure to the "larger buying market" of North America. People in the know search Vimeo and YouTube for their favorite bands' videos, and for those who still pride themselves on knowing the up-and-comers of indie fame, i.e. those who only like bands before the late night tv audience knows their names, there will always be the Pitchforks (that is, until everyone else knows about the site).

And please don't get me wrong, in no way has Jimmy Fallon waned in his choice of musical guests (this week features Sharon Von Etten and Wild Flag). But it looks like Letterman gets that it might be the music that has helped Jimmy Fallon (and The Roots) garner so much attention so quickly. So I say, "Kudos to you, Dave!". Kudos for trying to stay current with the hip kids of today! The more great music that goes out to the masses the better! Music should not be about status ... all you kids with ironic mustaches and Buddy Holly glasses must accept that you own no music, that music is universal and one of the great unifiers left. So, it's about time Dave starts flexing his indie muscles (he has been a New York institution much longer than the trust-fund children of Brooklyn!).

My only suggestion to Dave... see if LCD Soundsystem will reform and become your house band (sorry, Paul Shaffer!).

Ready, Set, Pogo!: ICEAGE Revive Punk on this Week's Bsides Wee Hour Classics, CKUT 90.3 FM

White Noise/White Runes: Danish Punks Explore the Ancient Runes of Punk & Post Punk on their Debut Youth Brigade

With songs averaging between 1:50 and 2:00, these Danish punks come crashing in at glacial magnitudes with their debut album, Youth Brigade. These 17 year olds have really done their homework. There's a palpable innocence about this band and they've done a convincing job of making us believe that sweet spot in the punk and post-punk periods lives on.

Iceage channels Joy Division (via more than just the bandname), the early Clash, the Damned, the rowdy sing along brotherhood style of Sham 69 (Wu Lyf make good use of this too) with hardcore's speed and passion à la Bad Brains. Mix that with the pop-goth sounds of the Cure and the noisy nostalgic pop sounds of the Jesus and Mary Chain, add some Nirvana and you've got an allstar list of Iceage's secret ingredients.

These sprites bring 1979 - 1989 back with a fierce vengeance with their own brand of vim and vigour. Take everything that was great in this period, ball it up into a wak of 12 songs and well, Iceage, half of your fans pogoing at your shows will be in their 30s and 40s. (that is, if they can find a babysitter!)

Did you know that Hermoddities' favorite activities include drinking Diet Hüsker Dü...and that the bulge around their necks is due to the excessive stuffing of Kleenex in their Lederhosen. Certain groups in Hermoddite society can be very sectarian; a popular sect known as World, Unite, Lucifer, Youth Foundation administers Draconian sanctions for such 'misbehaviors' as getting Fs in Math and escaping from the M.ental Ward to form a Pop Group.

Greetings friends. The above prose was a blatant exercise in hat-tipping to this week's featured artists in oh-so-clever riddles and rhymes.

Elsewhere: June was a month of book releases! Temple Bates of Pony da Look fame launched a fantastical book of comics and paintings (Check out Temple's work here) and Bob Mould published a bio on his musical odysseys in collaboration with Michael Azerrad. Woo!

Lederhosen Lucil makes an appearance at Ms. Bates' book launch and almost plays a song from her alter ego Krista Muir's new album (See "Start Again" for a good time, wink, wink) More on Krista's new album Between Atoms here.

It's not with ease that anyone foolhardy enough to tackle a *Brain(*I'll leave this typo in tact. Some would argue that he is a musical genius!) Eno bio conjures up a description of his expansive career…And, you'll see no such bravery here.

His most renown role as a rock star, albeit brief, was the flamboyant sound technician in the Bryan Ferry lead, Roxy Music. Since his departure in 1973, Eno's had his hand in just about everything. Possessing, a voracious appetite for music, Eno' s produced everything from, no wave, free jazz, to pure unadulterated pop. One of his longest standing projects early in his career on the Obscure label stemmed from Eno's relationship to contemporary experimental musicians such as Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars and Cornelius Cardew as well as the influences of Steve Reich and his experiments with phase shifting.

Eno's continued experimentation with tape looping, pre-recorded sounds, and cut-up techniques presaged the widespread use of sampling by a decade and can be heard in succeeding sample pioneers such as Public Enemy and Big Audio Dynamite. Eno also has earned accolades for his bold use of the VCS3 synth and his notorious "treatments" and inventions such as the snake guitar. Whether on a Bowie album, John Cale or Talking Heads, his production style has become trademark.

Oftentimes employing Oblique Strategy, a set of actions roughly inspired by the Cageon notion of "create parameters, set it off, see what happens" Eno's production techniques, whether direct Oblique strategy or simply steeped in anti-orthodoxy, seemed to set the tone for a prolific career that would span decades as well as genres.

A ridiculously eclectic resume found him in the company of David Byrne, Scott Waker, Grace Jones, Jah Wobble, U2, Coldplay and Liberace.

Contemporaneously, Eno's artistic ventures in experimentation with video and light coalesced naturally with his music, a gap that was originally bridged when he heard the Who. Although Eno would migrate away from any traditional form of rock toward 'vertical music', his inherent sensibilities for rhythm and strong sense of melody can be traced to his formative years growing up by an an American army base where he would be enchanted by the sounds of doo-wop and r&b. It's these influences that have lead him full circle from the very Europeon-Krautrock sounds of his work with Cluster and Harmonia to diasporic sounds of central and North Africa on David Byrne and Talking Heads albums, My Life in A Bush of Ghosts and Remain in LIght. His cumulative life experiences have, in one way or another, allowed him to channel music beyond any one geographic location that has culminated in a highly regarded canon in the history of contemporary 20th century music.

Whatever your opinion of Brain Eno, it's a safe bet that he offers something out there for everyone.

Thanks to Lexis from MIMS who took over the wheels of steel for Serious B two weeks ago has found the elusive Shook ones track that I had to get out to you radio heads ..ENJOY!

Mobb Deep “Shook Ones” finally uncovered!

Finally the sample behind one of the hardest and grimiest beats of the 90′s has been uncovered. Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones pt.II”, the mother of all classics if you wanna stab someone in an alley. Apparently, the archeological find was made by Bronco from the awesome sampling site called The-Breaks.com

The sample is from living legend Herbie Hancock‘s 1969 cult-classic called “Fat Albert Rotunda”. The track used for the Mobb Deep sample is called “Jessica” and only about 3 seconds of it is used, but the video below does a really nicejob on showing you how it was chopped, slowed down and looped.

Punk = An Accident Waiting Impatiently to Happen or Was it?

Okay, that last statement was false but the rest is true (except for Jell-o sponsoring Biafra). Learn these need-to-know FAQs about your favorite punk rock icons and more on the Bsides Wee Hour Classics radio show on CKUT 90.3 FM.

Hey folks, this show highlights some of the bands that form part of the fabric of the period known as first generation punk between 1976 - 1979. For purists, it was so fleeting, literally over the span of two, maybe three years; so many bands came and went. Because there was such a vibrant underground economy--the fanzine (i.e. Sniffin' Glue) and the indie label (i.e. Rough Trade) playing a key role in conjunction with clubs (i.e. the Roxy, the 100 club) and music journalists (i.e. Chrissie Hynde and Nick Kent)--punk exploded before even being labeled as such and was already foreshadowing its end while just barely beginning. It was a case of punk being cannibalized by its own legend. How did it get so big so quickly? It was the players in the first wave themselves that were walking advertisements. They were marketing themselves on their own terms, atleast semi-conscious of some of the major implications of punk-as-movement. This has never really been repeated at such an *organic level reaping such tremendous results. Its equivalent now would be a YouTube video gone viral. I claim no vast knowledge of the major label recording industry but it seems to me that the kind of access that some of these bands like the Sex Pistols were getting to major labels (i.e. EMI) could never occur now. (This kinda squashes the rock star pipe dream for myself as well as many others I know!) These were indeed special times for many reasons--times to be relished!

*I use organic very loosely here. I think that there was more than just a casual toying with art as artifice culminating in brilliant acts of subversion. First gen punks had popular attention--for a 'media minute', the public was watching as they gobbed, puked, and pogoed into the hearts of kids that had something to say. Many of those same kids picked up a guitar themselves and people listened.

Remembering Paris' Lizzy Mercier deCloux - We unleash the biological warfare of Lizzy Mercier DesCloux with such New York No Wave inspired tracks as "Tumour" and "Herpes Simplex". DesCloux's career is further explored as she progresses into a broader range of sounds embodying Worldbeat. DesCloux evlolutions takes us from the Bahamas to Ethiopia to Brazil. DesCloux truly became an international, albeit little-known, artist culminating in a respectable body of work with such jazz greats as Chet Baker.
A brief description of the downtown art scene featuring Jean Michel's Basquat's band "Gray": in New York City, circa 1980: Art not only became a fashion but a huge commodity to be bought and sold--both art and artist nearly cannibalized. No sooner was the art snatched up by collectors than it was auctioned off at inflated prices, the artist sometimes discarded and career destroyed before it ever began. Organic beginnings were traded in for designer careers plunged into instant decadence and fame. Obscene amounts of cash exchanged hands, the East village and Soho were no longer discernible from the egregious hustling of Wall Street. Basquiat, among others, Julian Schnabel, Jenny Holzer and Keith Haring, were some of the artists at the right place at the right time. But some never made it out alive.

A Look at the Career of PUnk ROck's Daughter, Ari UP aka Medusa

In a long roster of gal groups to really impact any given music scene, London's The Slits definitely count strongly among the best. The Slits don't really belong to London though; somehow it makes more sense to say the world because no other group in the first generation UK punk scene synthesized so many different influences and did it well. No, not even the Clash. That could be debated but one thing's for certain, if anything they are the Clash's female analog.

From Diana Ross' Love Jones to Grace Jones to Lee Scratch Perry to the Funky Four + 1, and let's ad a splash of the Sex Pistols (After all, that was Ari Ups Step Dad), there's a little something for everyone to be enjoyed in Slits music as well as Ari Up's solo work.

I won't go over Ari Up's entire career because it is covered in the radio show which will be aired on Halloween night on, CKUT 90.3 FM and available for download the next day. However, I will highlight some aspects that figure into Ari Ups musical mish-mash of influences.

New York City at some point in time seems to be part of everyone's "story" and it was no different for Ari Up.

After the Slits did two albums within four years, Cut and Return of the Giant Slits the group called it a day. Palmolive aka Paloma Romero went on to do another influential gal rock outfit, the Raincoats. Until this day Up expresses regret that Return went for the most part, under the radar. Starting out as the daughters of punk and wearing that moniker superbly when the formed in 1976, by their second album, the slits were essentially a dub act.

Up went on to work with the New Age Steppers, a post punk group to which she contributed vocals. After 2 years this gout dissolved. Up also maenad percussive contributions to the Talking Heads Fear of Music album as well.

Up moved to New York where she immediately connected with the sounds of early hip hop that were coming out the scene at the time. She was also absorbing the flavors of the Lower East side and living with Neneh Cherry. Tiny Weymouth from the Talking Heads lived in the flat above.

Among her adopted homes New York, Kingston Jamaica and the Jungle's of Belize have all given Ari Up a corollary/artillery of sound that you can feel, taste and touch.

Arto Lindsay was the man of the hour on this week's show and he is da man! His CV is too long to list but I'd like to do a few highlights.

U.S. born Arto Lindsay spent a good chunk of his formative years in Brazil. He later went to NYC and, captivated by the 80s downtown art scene, became a major part of the No Wave experimental movement that was taking place. Luminaries or more aptly, anti-luminaries in this scene included Lady Lydia Lunch of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Mr. Glenn Branca of the Theoretical Girls and James Chance and the Contortions. Arto got major cred from his no wave unit DNA which, was featured in a Brian Eno produced compilation "No New York". After exiting DNA Lindsay joined a zillion projects (okay, not a zillion) but several around the same time frame including The Ambitious Lovers, The Lounge Lizards and the Golden Palominos all of which are featured in this weeks broadcast. The latter was a project spearheaded by Feelies drummer, Anton Fier.

Arto's eclecticism has led him through the gamut from the extremely experimental to pop to Muscia Popular do Brasil (MPB). Arto has established a prolific career as collaborator with a number of major Brazilian artists and in his own solo career has often sang in Portuguese and fused Bossa Nova styles with other genres to forge unique sounds. What makes Arto Lindsay such an intriguing subject (and person) is his eclecticism. I definitely identify with that. Cultural eclecticism translates to musical eclecticism in this case and that's what resonates with me. Arto hits A-Z from hip hop & punk to free jazz to Bossa Nova to pure pop (well not so pure because there's always his own twist to it). Anyways, the appeal is there and whatever he does, you can be guaranteed that it won't be dull and will have alot of soul and visceral feeling to it. Keep it up Arto Lindsay. I tip my hat to ya.

Saturday August 14th happens at Peace Park (1195 St Laurent) from noon to 8pm...its free ...its outdoors and its all ages!!! see emcees's - deejay's- bboys and bgirls, Sk8 jams and crew murals happening ll day and of course the bside crew will be in FULL EFFECT

Sunday August 15th happens as usual behind the Foufounes Electriques (87 St Catherine) , from noon to 10pm, again its FREE and its outdoor and its all ages BUT the BSides crew WILL be holding down the turntables from Noon till 2pm. Emcees' - deejays - breakers- graffiti and the massive Sk8 Jam all happening....

MY CULTURE MY EXPRESSION !

The exhibition will be a creation of urban arts using the medium of graffiti to create positive reflections of youth expression; through a 10 week, 20 workshops Selena has shown the youth the 'real' urban art culture (graffiti, hip hop, break dancing etc) and all the tenants that come with being a responsible urban 'graffiti' artist culminating into creation of a 20 foot mural for the benefit of the community associations and schools.

MADE 7 SPOTLIGHTS : JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT, MILES DAVIS, AND BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE

This weekend was art, music and discovery. Ideally every weekend would be, if only!

I went to the Miles Davis exhibit and was pleasantly surprised to see a bunch of Jean Michel Basquiat works there, all of which were in some form paying tributes to jazz greats, i.e. Miles.

I have to say that seeing Basquiat's works felt larger than life, even when standing right in front it. At the same time it consolidates the fact that "oh, this person, was a human being" and this is the mark they left so you're no longer as distanced by films, biographies and photos. The art is the closest opportunity in a sense, to have an unmediated conversation. Also, and I guess this just depends on the artist, I tend to think alot about their life. The art piece became a less relevant artifact as a I started to think about the artist himself and what lead up to the production of the piece. In a nutshell the story behind it. Was it a one-off to make a quick buck? Was it something slaved over, a work of passion that the artist was pained to part with?

What I also left the exhibit thinking about was how much of a pop star Miles Davis really was. More than a jazz star but truly a pop star among many other things. A great painter (interestingly enough, influenced by Basquiat's style), piano player, FASHIONISTA, whoa, some the digs this guy got into and parading around with Warhol! Covering the music of Pop culture icons from Cyndi Lauper to Michael Jackson, Davis' aspirations to ROCK out landed him gigs with the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and the Who. What if Miles and Hendrix really were able pull off a collaboration? Miles's affinity to push the envelope I'm certain turned jazz fans into rock fans and vice-versa. I could do with a little less of the Whah-whah pedal so trademark of the physc-rock of the 70s but I'm sure I could have tolerated it for a Hendrix - Davis collaboration.

The NCRC is an opportunity for a diverse and representative range of community broadcasters from all parts of Canada to converge, talk all things radio, get hands-on training, confront our challenges, celebrate our victories, and develop momentum to bring back to each station, strengthening Canada's campus and community broadcasting sector. We strongly encourage participation from people marginalized by race, ethnicity, Aboriginal heritage, gender, age, ability, class, or sexual orientation! The conference will also be a unique opportunity for anglophone and francophone community broadcasters to come together - instant translation to be provided!

Yes people, we figured the best way to get the word out on us to the folks that may or may not know that we're here and we've taken on the airwaves, Serious created a Facebook page that you can add yourselves on to and keep up with the bizarre ride on the bside.
We are chomping at the bits as we have been approved the 4 - 7 am slot on CKUT every 2nd Monday folks....

A bit o' news our resident djette ( ms serious black) has finally made her mark in the artists/graffiti community with a joint show happening in the UK this month, you can see part of the collection on http://www.saatchigallery.co.uk/yourgallery/artist_profile/Ms+Manic/106883.html and type in ms manic ( her alias's alias) and you will find all the hype on our little djette.

...well folks the moment has finally arrived with bsides official inaugural show happening Monday March 23rd on CKUT 90.3 ...we've been approved and for the moment we're occupying the airwaves every 2ND Monday from4 - 7 AM

In future we, your hosts JJ Ford and Serious Black will be posting our play lists the night before or the morning of the show; eventually we will have our sets up for download and podcast...

B-Sides (a musical odyssey)
The theory of B-Sides is as follows: “A-sides” are often what the record company want the public to hear, but “B-sides” are more often what the artist want the public to hear. On air we would attempt to do justice to our favorite artists’ records by airing the less played songs, but frequently the most loved by fans. We will also try to offer a more diverse selection of genres than the average music radio hour. Who listens to one type of music anymore? With the advent of such devices as mp3 players, few limit themselves to only listening to a singular genre of music. While our parents generation had to make do with only one or two new records a month, our generation has the ability to obtain entire discographies in a matter of hours…. for FREE! (Not that we’re promoting illegal downloading, but it’s a reality!) So that leaves the public, with their waning musical appetites, to continuously digest large and diverse amounts of new music. What we will aim to achieve with the Monday 4-7 am slot is exactly that, offer them as much of a diverse musical experience as possible, all the while staying true to the theory of B-Sides and playing the tracks seldom heard over the air-waves. And besides all of the above, B-Sides aims to be an enjoyable way to go to sleep Sunday night or wake up Monday morning
